Western Canada Lottery Corporation –
Western 649
The WCLC – Western Canada Lottery Corporation was founded in 1974 as a not-for-profit organization for the purposes of operating Canadian Lottery games in the western provinces of Canada – Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.
Alongside these provinces, the Yukon Territory, Northwest Territories and Nunavut also participate as associate members with the main bases for the WCLC being in Stettler, Alberta and Winnipeg, Manitoba. The regional Canadian Lottery companies that are members of the WCLC are the Alberta Lottery, Manitoba Lotteries, Saskatchewan Lotteries and in the north, Lotteries Yukon and the Northwest Territory’s Sport North.
The Western Canada Lottery Corporation offers numerous Canadian Lotteries including the national Lotto 649 and the more recent Lotto Max games in conjunction with the Interprovincial Lottery Corporation – ILC. In addition to these, the WCLC runs its own regional games including PAYDAY, EXTRA, PICK 3, SPORT SELECT, KENO, various Scratch ‘n’ Win games plus its flagship lottery which we will be looking at in more detail here – the Western 649.
Interprovincial Lottery Corporation - ILC
The Western Canada Lottery Corporation – WCLC – is a regional marketing organization of Canada’s Interprovincial Lottery Corporation – ILC – who manage and run the national Canadian Lotteries.
The Interprovincial Lottery Corporation is based in Toronto, Ontario and is made up of 5 lottery commissions from the various provinces and these 5 Canadian lottery companies jointly own the ILC.
The other Canadian Lottery companies that make up the ILC along with the Western Canada Lottery Corporation are the Atlantic Lottery Corporation, the Ontario Lottery and Gambling Corporation, Loto Quebec and BC Lotteries.
The ILC was created in 1976 by the provincial Canadian lotto companies to oversee and operate national lottery games across Canada and today it operates 2 major Canadian Lottery games – the Lotto 649 and the Lotto Max.
The WCLC is responsible for marketing the national ILC games of Lotto 649 & Lotto Max within the provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Yukon, Northern Territories and Nunavut.
Western 649 - Overview
The Western 649 is the traditional draw-style, pick six lotto game of the WCLC – Western Canada Lottery Corporation. It is the WCLC flagship game and is Western Canada’s very own lottery – available in the Prairie provinces and the Territories – that offers you the chance to win up to $1 Million twice a week for just a dollar.
The Western 649 lottery uses a matrix of 6/49 and the WCLC make the draw twice per week on Wednesdays and Saturdays from their HQ in Winnipeg at 9.30pm CT, 8.30pm MT, 7.30pm PT.
Unlike some Canadian lotteries and many of the USA Lottery games, the Western 649 doesn’t rollover if the jackpot is not won. The top prize remains at $1 million.
This is because – of course – the WCLC game has a smaller number of players than the national games of Lotto 649 and Lotto Max – so to ensure a $1 million jackpot for every draw for the Western Lotto 649 game means that the WCLC needs to cap the Jackpot at $1 million.
We are happy to have reviewed the Western 649 from the Western Canada Lottery Corporation and would recommend giving it a go to try out your luck – first of all, though, take a look at how it works below…
How It Works…
The Western 649 uses what’s known as a matrix of 6/49 - which means that when you are playing the Western Canada 649, you will need to select 6 numbers out of a pool of numbers ranging from 1 to 49 – if you match all 6 numbers drawn then you will be a WCLC jackpot winner.
As well as the 6 main numbers, a 7th number is also drawn. This is the bonus number and is drawn after the 6 main Western 649 numbers have been drawn.
In addition to the jackpot itself, there are 4 further ways in which you can win on the Western 649 - with prizes to be won if you match either 5 main numbers plus the bonus number, 5 main numbers, 4 main numbers or 3 of the main numbers.
A Quick Pick facility is available when playing the Western Lotto 649 - very much the same as the Lucky Dip option that is used in the UK National Lottery or Europe’s Euro-Millions or many other Canadian Lottery & USA lottery games – which means that you can ask the lottery retailer or computer to randomly select all your Western 649 numbers for you.
So – playing the Western 649 is simple…just select your own 6 numbers or request them to be randomly generated for you by using the “Quick Pick” option.
The cost of playing the Western Canada 649 is just $1 CAD.
Random Number Generator
Along with many other Canadian Lottery & USA Lottery games, the WCLC make their draws for the Western 649 using an automated drawing machine (ADM), also known as a Random Number Generator (RNG). The 649 Lotto numbers are drawn using this method as opposed to the traditional way of using numbered lottery balls drawn from a rotating drum.
Who Can Play?
Similar to the majority of Canada Lotto & USA Lotto games - previously only citizens living in one of the Western Canada regions were allowed to play in any of the WCLC games including the Western 649. You used to have to purchase your Western 649 tickets from an authorized retailer based in one of the participating provinces.
Nowadays, though, with a good number of online lottery ticket sales companies around the world - such as TheLotter - who are authorized, accredited and genuine - you are able to select your Western 649 numbers online and purchase your tickets without worrying about where in the world you may live.
This is great news of course if you live outside of the Canadian Pairie provinces and Territories but want to play this Canadian Lottery and ensure your entry into the next draw or just want to have the ease and convenience of being in the position to buy lottery tickets online.
Once you have entered into the draw, you can then simply and easily check the very latest 649 Lottery results online to see how you have done and to find out if you have become one of the lucky winners.
Like nearly all of the other USA & Canadian lotteries, you will need to be 18 years of age to be eligible to purchase a ticket for any of the WCLC games including the Western Canada 649.

The likelihood of winning a third tier prize comes in at 1 in 27.74 thousand for matching 5 of the main numbers and for a prize on the fourth tier the odds are reduced right down to just 1 in 517 for matching 4 of the main numbers.

How Are Jackpots Paid?
If you become the lucky winner of a Western 649 jackpot, the WCLC will pay your winnings to you in the form of a cash lump sum.
This differs slightly from many USA Lotteries where winners can chose either a cash lump sum or annuity option.
If your win with the Western Canada Lottery Corporation is up to $1,000 you will be able to claim your prize from one of the WCLC lottery ticket sales centers across the region.
If you have won between $1,000 & $9,999,999 on the Western 649 – you will be able to claim your winnings at one of the WCLC Prize Payout Offices in either Calgary or St.Albert, Alberta – Regina or Saskatoon, Saskatchewan – or Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Should your WCLC win be $10,000 or more, you will need to call the Western Canada Lottery Corporation to make an appointment to validate your win and claim your prize.
If you win any prize on the Western Lotto 649 you will have up to 1 year from the draw date in which to claim your prize before your winning lottery ticket becomes invalid.
Of course, if you play lottery online, whatever the size of your win, you needn’t be concerned with any of these details as your lottery ticket sales agent will take care of everything for you, so you don’t need to worry if you use TheLotter or any other reputable company.
How the Provinces Benefit…
Profits from all the WCLC games including the 649 Lottery go towards good causes determined by the governments of each of the participating WCLC members and associate members – Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, Yukon Territory, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut.
For example, in Alberta, every year thousands of charitable, volunteer and non-profit groups benefit from the Alberta Lottery Fund – be it a local library, museum, an athletic or cultural event or a conservation project.
In Saskatchewan, over 12,000 volunteer sport, culture and recreation groups benefit from Saskatchewan Lotteries funding.
Manitoba Lotteries takes great pride in supporting its communities with particular beneficiaries being the Habitat for Humanity (HFH), various sports organizations and community events such as the Super Cities Walk for MS among many others.
Yukon Lotteries revenue goes towards assisting many areas of life for residents of the Yukon, including the Arts, Sports and Recreation.
