South Dakota Mega Millions
The South Dakota Lottery is 1 of 46 State & District Lotteries that offer the huge Mega Millions game – in this case the South Dakota Mega Millions – as part of its overall portfolio of lottery games.
The Mega Millions is a Multi-State USA Lottery that is run and organized by the Mega Millions Consortium – who administer and syndicate the game across the USA and is one of the largest lottery games in the world – having produced a massive world record jackpot of an incredible US$ 656 MILLION in March 2012. This huge amount was shared between 3 Mega Millions winning tickets from the States of Illinois, Kansas and Maryland and to date is the 2nd biggest jackpot ever won in the history of jackpot lotto games anywhere in the world.
The very first Mega Millions draw took place on May 17th 2002 with 6 USA Lottery companies taking part who were all members of the Mega Millions Consortium.
The game had changed its name and format from the Big Game which had first started back on August 31st 1996. Upon this change – 2 further State Lottery companies joined and more would follow.
Tickets for the South Dakota Mega Millions were first sold on May 31st 2010 after the Multi State Lottery Association (MUSL) who run the Powerball – of which the South Dakota Lottery is a member – had entered into a cross-selling agreement with the Mega Millions consortium – allowing the sales of Mega Millions in Powerball states and Powerball in Mega Millions states.
SD Mega Millions – How it Works
The South Dakota Mega Millions works in exactly the same way as the Mega Millions game works in all the other 44 States and Districts in the USA that offer the game.
Jackpots start off at US$ 40 MILLION and ROLLOVER after each draw when the top prize is not won – making for some enormous jackpot figures.
6 numbers are drawn in total for the SD Mega Millions from 2 separate machines – firstly 5 numbers from 70 white balls are drawn and then 1 number (the MEGA ball) from 25 gold balls is drawn.
Draws for the South Dakota Lottery Mega Millions take place twice every week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 10.00pm CST (11.00pm EST).
In addition to the 6 Mega Millions numbers drawn – a further number is drawn – using a Random Number Generator…the MEGAPLIER number…
MEGAPLIER…
This separate MEGAPLIER prize multiplier number drawn will be either 2, 3, 4 or 5 – and is there to give players of the Mega Millions South Dakota a chance to increase their winnings on all levels of the prize structure apart from the Mega Millions jackpot itself.
With MEGAPLIER – you are able to multiply your winnings on these levels by 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x – greatly increasing the amount you can walk away with.

The aim when you are playing is to correctly select as many of the Mega Millions winning numbers as possible – and as there are a total of 9 different ways that you can win on the South Dakota Mega Millions – you have a great chance of winning any of the prizes.
There are generally 4 ways you can play the SD Mega Millions…
1. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 plus your 1 MEGA Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.
2. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 and use the Quick Pick option to let the computer choose your MEGA Ball (gold ball)
number for you from 1 to 25 – using a random number selector / random number generator.
3. Use the Quick Pick option to let the computer pick your 5 main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 using a random number generator – and then pick your own MEGA Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.
4. Use the Quick Pick option to let the computer choose both your 5 main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 AND also your 1 MEGA Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25 using its random number generator.

MEGAPLIER…
For just an extra dollar – you can choose to increase your South Dakota Mega Millions lottery win on all 8 levels except the jackpot itself – by applying the MEGAPLIER option when you are playing the SD Mega Millions.

SD Mega Millions Winners
Even though the South Dakota Lottery has only been selling Mega Millions tickets since May 31st 2010 – there have already been some big Mega Millions winners in South Dakota…
The biggest win so far on the SD Mega Millions Lottery has been an exciting US$ 250,000 won on March 30th 2012 by Michael Stokke from Sioux Falls who had successfully matched the 5 main Mega Millions numbers to claim a 2nd prize.
US$ 250,000 was also won just a week earlier by Linda and Pete Marcus from Huron on March 23rd 2012. This was the first Mega Millions 2nd prize to have been won in South Dakota.
Apart from these 2nd prize wins – there have been many other wins on the SD Mega Millions and we are still awaiting the first Mega Millions jackpot winners to emerge from the State.
SD Mega Millions – How Prizes are Paid
If you have won a SD Mega Millions jackpot – you will be able to claim your prize as either a cash lump sum or as an annuity payment – you will need to make this choice within 60 days of making your claim.
If you choose the annuity option – your SD Mega Millions win will be paid to you annually over a 30 year period.
For all prizes on the South Dakota Mega Millions – you will have up to 180 days from the date of the draw – to make your claim before your Mega Millions tickets will become invalid.
If your SD Mega Millions win is up to US$ 100.00 – you will be able to claim your winnings from any SD Lotto retailer or by mail.
If you’ve won US$ 100 or more on the South Dakota Mega Millions – you can claim your prize either at one of the South Dakota Lottery offices in Pierre, Sioux Falls or Rapid City or by mail.
If you have been lucky enough to win a South Dakota Lottery jackpot prize you will need to make your claim at the SDLottery Headquarters in Pierre.
