South Carolina Mega Millions
The SC Lottery is 1 of 46 US State & District Lotteries that offer the massive Mega Millions game – in this case the SC Mega Millions – as part of its overall portfolio of lottery games.
The Mega Millions is a Multi-State USA Lottery that is run and operated by the Mega Millions Consortium – who administer and syndicate the game across the USA and is one of the largest lottery games in the world – having produced a record jackpot of a huge US$ 656 MILLION. The very first Mega Millions draw took place on May 17th 2002 with 6 USA Lottery companies taking part who were all members of the Mega Millions Consortium.
The game had changed its name and format from the Big Game which had first started back on August 31st 1996. Upon this change – 2 further State Lottery companies joined and more would follow.
The SC Mega Millions was first sold on January 31st 2010 when the Multi State Lottery Association (MUSL) who run the Powerball game – of which the SC Education Lottery is a member – entered into a cross-selling agreement with the Mega Millions consortium – allowing the sales of Mega Millions in Powerball states and Powerball in Mega Millions states.
SC Mega Millions – How it Works
The South Carolina Mega Millions works in precisely the same way that the Mega Millions game works in all the States and Districts in the US that offer the game.
Jackpots start off at US$ 40 MILLION and ROLLOVER after each draw when the top prize is not won – making for some enormous jackpot figures.
6 numbers are drawn in total for the SC Lottery Mega Millions from 2 separate drawing machines – firstly 5 numbers are drawn from 70 white balls and then 1 number (the MEGAball) is drawn from 25 gold balls.
Draws for the South Carolina Lottery Mega Millions take place twice every week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11.00pm EST.
In addition to the 6 Mega Millions numbers drawn – a further number is drawn – using a Random Number Generator…the Mega Millions MEGAPLIER number…
MEGAPLIER…
This separate MEGAPLIER prize multiplier number drawn will be either 2, 3, 4 or 5 – and is there to give players of the Mega Millions SC a chance to increase their winnings on all levels of the prize structure apart from the South Carolina Lottery Mega Millions jackpot itself.
With MEGAPLIER – you are able to multiply your winnings on these levels by 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x – greatly increasing the amount you can walk away with.
If a player matches the 5 main Mega Millions numbers playing with the MEGAPLIER add-on – and a MEGAPLIER number of 5 is drawn – the second tier prize of US$ 1 MILLION would be multiplied by x5 and they could win US$ 5 MILLION.
SC Mega Millions – How to Play
The aim when you are playing is to correctly select as many of the Mega Millions winning prize numbers as possible – and with a total of 9 different ways in which you can win on the SC Mega Millions – you have a great chance of winning a prize.
There are generally 4 ways you can play the Mega Millions SC…
1. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 plus your 1 Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.
2. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 and use the Quick Pick option to let the computer choose your Mega Ball (gold ball) number for you from 1 to 25 – using a random number picker / random number generator.
3. Use the Quick Pick option to let the computer pick your 5 main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 using a random number generator – and then pick your own Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.
4. Use the Quick Pick option available to let the computer choose both your 5 main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 and also your 1 Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25 using its random number generator.

MEGAPLIER…
For just an extra dollar – you can choose to increase your SC Lottery Mega Millions winnings on all levels except the jackpot itself – by adding the MEGAPLIER option when you are playing the SC Mega Millions.
If your chosen South Carolina Mega Millions numbers match the Mega Millions winning numbers on any of these prize levels – you immediately increase your winnings by either 2, 3, 4 or 5 times – depending on what Mega Millions MEGAPLIER number was drawn.

SC Mega Millions – Biggest Prize Winners
Even though the SC Lottery has only been selling Mega Millions tickets since May 16th 2010 – there have already been some big SC Mega Millions winners…
The biggest wins so far on the South Carolina Mega Millions have been 2nd prize US$ 1 Million wins where the lucky winners have successfully matched all 5 of the main Mega Millions winning numbers.
Each of these wins have been multiplied by x4 as the winners had decided to play Mega Millions using the MegaPlier multiplier feature and so increase their base US$ 250,000 2nd prize win.
These US$ 1 Million wins on the South Carolina Mega Millions have been achieved on May 15th 2012 by a Columbia woman, on February 17th 2012 by a woman from Summerville, 2 friends from Anderson on June 7th 2011 and on January 4th 2011 by a resident of Charleston.
There have also been many standard US$ 250,000 Mega Millions 2nd prize wins and we are still waiting for the first Mega Millions jackpot winner to emerge from South Carolina – we are confident it will only be a matter of time before this happens.
SC Mega Millions – How Prizes are Paid
If you have won a SC Mega Millions jackpot – you will be able to claim your prize as either a cash lump sum or as an annuity payment – you must make this choice within 60 days of the draw – and if you choose the annuity option, your SC Mega Millions winnings will be paid to you annually over a 30 year period.
For all prizes on the Mega Millions SC you will have 180 days from the date printed on your ticket to make your claim before your Mega Millions ticket will become invalid.
If your win on the SC Mega Millions is up to US$ 500 – you will be able to claim your winnings at any South Carolina Education Lottery retailer.
If you’ve had a win of between US$ 501 and US$ 100,000 on the SC Mega Millions – you will be able to claim your prize by mail using an SCEL claim form.
If you have had a win of more than US$ 100,000 on the Mega Millions South Carolina – you can claim your prize in person at one of the Lottery SC offices in Columbia, Greenville or Mt.Pleasant.
