RI Lottery Mega Millions
The Rhode Island Lottery is 1 of 46 US State & District Lotteries that offer the huge Mega Millions game – in this case the RI Lottery Mega Millions – as part of its overall portfolio of lotto games.
The Mega Millions is a Multi-State USA Lottery that is run and operated by the Mega Millions Consortium – who administer and syndicate the game across the USA and is one of the largest lottery games in the world – having produced a massive world record jackpot of an incredible US$ 656 MILLION in March 2012. This huge jackpot was shared between 3 winning Mega Millions tickets from Illinois, Kansas and Maryland and stands as the 2nd biggest jackpot ever won in the history of jackpot lottery games throughout the world.
The very first Mega Millions draw took place on May 17th 2002 with 6 USA Lottery companies taking part who were all members of the Mega Millions Consortium.
The game had changed its name and format from the Big Game which had first started back on August 31st 1996. Upon this change – 2 further State Lottery companies joined and more would follow.
The RI Mega Millions was first sold on January 31st 2010 when the Multi State Lottery Association (MUSL) who run the Powerball game – of which the Rhode Island Lottery is a member – entered into a cross-selling agreement with the Mega Millions consortium – allowing the sales of Mega Millions in Powerball states and Powerball in Mega Millions states.
RI Mega Millions – How it Works
The Rhode Island Mega Millions game works in exactly the same way as the Mega Millions works in all the States and Districts in the US that offer the game.
Jackpots start off at US$ 40 MILLION and ROLLOVER after each draw when the top prize is not won – making for some enormous jackpot figures.
6 numbers are drawn in total for the RI Lottery Mega Millions from 2 separate drawing machines – firstly 5 numbers are drawn from 70 white balls and then 1 number (the MEGAball) is drawn from 25 gold balls.
Draws for the RI Lottery Mega Millions take place twice every week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11.00pm EST.
In addition to the 6 Mega Millions numbers drawn – a further number is drawn – using a Random Number Generator…the Mega Millions MEGAPLIER number…
MEGAPLIER…
This separate MEGAPLIER prize multiplier number drawn will be either 2, 3, 4 or 5 – and is there to give players of the Mega Millions Rhode Island a chance to increase their winnings on all levels of the prize structure apart from the RI Mega Millions Lottery jackpot itself.
With MEGAPLIER – you are able to multiply your winnings on these levels by 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x – greatly increasing the amount you can walk away with.
If a player matches the 5 main Mega Millions numbers playing with the MEGAPLIER add-on – and a MEGAPLIER number of 5 is drawn – the second tier prize of US$ 1 MILLION would be multiplied by x5 and they could win US$ 5 MILLION.
RI Mega Millions – How to Play
Your aim when you are playing is to correctly select as many of the Mega Millions winning prize numbers as possible – and as there are 9 different ways in which you can win on the Rhode Island Mega Millions – you have a great chance of winning a prize.
There are principally 4 ways you can play the Mega Millions RI…
1. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 plus your 1 Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.
2. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 and use the Quick Pick option to let the computer choose your Mega Ball (gold ball) number for you from 1 to 25 – using a lotto number selector / random number generator.
3. Use the Quick Pick option to let the computer pick your 5 main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 using a random number generator – and then pick your own Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.
4. Use the Quick Pick option available to let the computer choose both your 5 main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 and also your 1 Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25 using its random number generator.

MEGAPLIER…
For just an extra dollar – you can choose to increase your RI Lottery Mega Millions winnings on all levels except the jackpot itself – by adding the MEGAPLIER option when you are playing the RI Mega Millions.
If your chosen RI Mega Millions numbers match the Mega Millions winning numbers on any of these prize levels – you immediately increase your winnings by either 2, 3, 4 or 5 times – depending on what Mega Millions MEGAPLIER number was drawn.
If you play Mega Millions with MEGAPLIER and you are lucky enough to correctly select the 5 main Mega Millions numbers and a MEGAPLIER number of 5 is drawn – the second tier Mega Millions prize of US$ 1 MILLION will be increased by 5x and you could will away with US$ 5 MILLION.

RI Mega Millions Winners
Even though the Rhode Island Lottery has only been selling RI Mega Millions tickets since January 31st 2010 – there have already been some lucky winners of the RI Lottery Mega Millions…
Sandra Mitton from North Kingstown became the winner of the largest RI Lottery Mega Millions prize to date when she scooped a fantastic US$ 40,000 on April 23rd 2010. Sandra had used the MEGAPLIER feature when playing – increasing her Mega Millions win from US$ 10,000.
On May 4th 2010 Michael McCabe from Warwick became the lucky winner of US$ 10,000 on the RI Mega Millions and there have been many other winners of US$ 10,000 on the RI Mega Millions.
RI Mega Millions – How Prizes are Paid
If you have won a RI Mega Millions jackpot – you will be able to claim your prize as either a cash lump sum or as an annuity payment – you will need to make this choice within 60 days of the draw. With the annuity option – your Rhode Island Mega Millions winnings will be paid to you annually over a 30 year period.
For all prizes on the Mega Millions RI – you will have 365 days from the date of the draw taking place – to make your claim before your Mega Millions ticket will become invalid.
If your win on the Mega Millions RI is up to US$ 599 – you will be able to claim your winnings at any RILottery retailer.
If you’ve had a win of US$ 600 or more on the RI Lottery Mega Millions – you will need to claim your prize from the Rhode Island Lottery Headquarters in Cranston.
