"Multiply your Powerball winings using the Powerball POWER PLAY feature"
The Powerball POWERPLAY is a feature that applies to the Powerball lottery game that is played right across the United States of America in 44 States plus the District of Columbia the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.
The Powerball POWERPLAY option allows players to multiply their winnings on all levels when playing – except the Powerball jackpot itself.
It is very similar to the multiplier feature – MEGAPLIER – that is used by the Mega Millions Consortium to increase the winnings of the non-jackpot prizes on their Mega Millions game.
The Powerball POWERPLAY multiplier was first introduced to the Powerball game by the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) on March 7th 2001.
46 of the 47 State Lotteries and District Lotteries that offer the Powerball game – include the option of playing with the Powerball POWER PLAY feature.
A full list of all these USA Lottery companies that carry the Power Ball POWER PLAY can be found below.
The only US Lottery company that does not currently offer the Power Ball Power Play option is the California Lottery due to its pari-mutel prize regulations.
More and more Powerball winners are greatly increasing their non-jackpot winnings by utilising the Power Ball POWER PLAY option when they play Powerball.
The Powerball POWER PLAY multiplier number is drawn by a random number generator – in addition to the 5 main Powerball numbers and the PowerBall.
You can play Powerball with the POWERPLAY option for just an extra dollar to increase the amount of your winnings on 8 different levels of the Powerball prize structure – every level that is – apart from the jackpot itself.
The Powerball POWER PLAY number is drawn twice every week just before the main Powerball winning numbers and will be either 2, 3, 4 or 5.
This means that when you play Powerball with the Powerball POWERPLAY feature – you are able to multiply your winnings on these levels by either 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x – vastly increasing the amount of your win.
For example – if you were to match 4 of the main Powerball winning numbers qualifying for a prize of US$ 100 and a Powerball POWERPLAY number of 2 is drawn – your winnings will immediately be doubled to US$ 200.
Likewise – if you were to match 4 of the main Powerball winning numbers plus the PowerBall and a Powerball POWERPLAY number of 3 is drawn – your US$ 10,000 win will immediately be trebled to US$ 30,000.
If you match all 5 of the main Powerball winning numbers your second prize level winnings of US$ 1 MILLION will automatically be doubled no matter what POWERPLAY number has been drawn – increasing your winnings to US$ 2 MILLION.
The Powerball POWER PLAY multiplier for the second tier prize level is not dependent on the POWERPLAY number drawn.
Almost every year – the Multi-State Lottery Association (MUSL) – give Powerball players a chance to increase their winnings even further when playing with the Powerball POWERPLAY option.
During these special Powerball POWER PLAY promotions – a 10x multiplier is offered – allowing you to increase your winnings on all levels except the jackpot by 10 times!
This means, for example, if you were to match all 5 of the main Powerball winning numbers and the promotional Powerball POWERPLAY number of 10 was drawn – your third tier Powerball prize winnings of US$ 50,000 would automatically be increased by 10 times to US$ 500,000!
The first Powerball POWERPLAY promotion of 10x occurred from March 2nd through to March 29th 2006 and they have taken place every year since (except 2009) either in April or May.
The Powerball POWERPLAY number is drawn twice per week at Universal Studios in Orlando, FL by a random number generator – just before the main Powerball winning numbers are drawn (from the same location).

Here is a complete list of the US State Lottery companies that currently offer the Powerball POWERPLAY option to their customers who play Powerball.
From when the MUSL first introduced it on March 7th 2001 until October 8th 2002 the Powerball POWERPLAY feature could draw a PowerPlay number of either 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x – therefore if a 1x was drawn – there would be no multiplication of winnings.
From October 9th 2002 the possibility of the POWERPLAY number being drawn as a 1x was removed.
Originally the Powerball POWERPLAY number was selected using a traditional “wheel” drawing method that used 15 slots with the PowerPlay numbers occupying each slot.
From August 28th 2005 the Powerball POWERPLAY wheel was increased in size to use 16 slots – with each of the 2x, 3x, 4x and 5x multipliers occupying 4 slots a piece. These days the POWERPLAY number is now drawn using a random number generator.
From January 4th 2009 the Powerball POWERPLAY option was enhanced so that any player who matched all 5 of the main Powerball winning numbers and played with the POWERPLAY feature – would win US$ 1 Million cash no matter what POWERPLAY number had been drawn.
In 2012 – changes made to the Powerball rules meant that all lower tier prizes won when playing with the Power Play option were fixed amounts.
On January 19th 2014 – the Power Play draw numbers were changed to 30 – comprising of 15 sets of 2x, 9 sets of 3x, 3 sets of 4x and 3 sets of 5x.
On Octocer 4th 2015 the Power Play draw numbers were changed again to 42 / 43. This time they are made up of 24 sets of 2x, 13 sets of 3x, 3 sets of 4x, 2 sets of 5x and 1 set of 10x.
There is 1 principal difference when using the Powerball POWER PLAY feature and the Mega Millions MegaPlier option.
Prizes won on the 2nd levels of the Powerball and Mega Millions games are treated differently with the Power Play and MegaPlier.
A US$ 1 MILLION prize won on the 2nd level of the Powerball will automatically be doubled to US$ 2 MILLION whatever Power Play number may have been drawn for that game.
Whereas a US$ 1 MILLION prize won on the 2nd level of the Mega Millions will be multiplied by whatever MegaPlier number has been drawn. For example – a US$ 1 MILLION Mega Millions 2nd prize will be increased to US$ 5 MILLION if a MegaPlier of x5 has been drawn for that game.
