North Carolina Mega Millions
The North Carolina Lottery is 1 of 46 US State Lotteries & District Lotteries that offer the huge Mega Millions game – in this case the NC Mega Millions – as part of its overall portfolio of lottery games.
The Mega Millions is a Multi-State USA Lottery that is run and operated by the Mega Millions Consortium – who administer and syndicate the game across the USA and is one of the largest lottery games across the world – having produced a massive world record jackpot of an incredible US$ 656 MILLION in March 2012. This incredible amount was shared between 3 winning Mega Millions tickets from Illinois, Kansas and Maryland and stands as the 2nd biggest jackpot ever won in jackpot lottery history.
The very first Mega Millions draw took place on May 17th 2002 with 6 USA Lottery companies taking part who were all members of the Mega Millions Consortium.
The game had changed its name and format from the Big Game which had first started back on August 31st 1996. Upon this change – 2 further State Lottery companies joined and more would follow.
North Carolina Mega Millions tickets were first put on sale on January 31st 2010 when the Multi State Lottery Association (MUSL) who run the Powerball game – of which the NC Lottery is a member – entered into a cross-selling agreement with the Mega Millions consortium – allowing the sales of Mega Millions in Powerball states and Powerball in Mega Millions states.
NC Mega Millions – How it Works
The North Carolina Mega Millions works in precisely the same way as the Mega Millions game works in all the States and Districts in the US that offer the game.
Jackpots start off at US$ 40 MILLION and ROLLOVER after each draw when the top prize is not won – making for some enormous jackpot figures.
6 numbers are drawn in total for the Mega Millions North Carolina from 2 separate drawing machines – firstly 5 numbers are drawn from 70 white balls and then 1 number (the MEGAball) is drawn from 25 gold balls.
Draws for the NC Mega Millions Lottery take place twice every week on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11.00pm EST.
In addition to the 6 Mega Millions numbers drawn – a further number is drawn – using a Random Number Generator…the Mega Millions MEGAPLIER number…
MEGAPLIER…
This separate MEGAPLIER prize multiplier number drawn will be either 2, 3, 4 or 5 – and is there to give players of the Mega Millions NC a chance to increase their winnings on all levels of the prize structure apart from the Mega Millions NC jackpot itself.
With MEGAPLIER – you are able to multiply your winnings on these levels by 2x, 3x, 4x or 5x – greatly increasing the amount you can walk away with.
If a player matches the 5 main Mega Millions numbers playing with the MEGAPLIER add-on – and a MEGAPLIER number of 5 is drawn – the second tier prize of US$ 1 MILLION would be multiplied by x5 and they could win US$ 5 MILLION.
NC Mega Millions – How to Play
The aim when you are playing is to correctly select as many of the Mega Millions winning prize numbers as possible – and with a total of 9 different ways that you can win on the NC Mega Millions Lottery – you have a great chance of winning a prize.
There are generally 4 ways you can play the NC Mega Millions…
1. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 plus your 1 Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.
2. Pick 5 of your own main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 and use the Quick Pick option to let the computer choose your Mega Ball (gold ball) number for you from 1 to 25 – using a lotto number picker / random number generator.
3. Use the Quick Pick option to let the computer pick your 5 main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 using a random number generator – and then pick your own Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25.
4. Use the Quick Pick option available to let the computer choose both your 5 main (white ball) numbers from 1 to 70 and also your 1 Mega Ball (gold ball) number from 1 to 25 using its random number generator.

MEGAPLIER…
For just an extra dollar – you can choose to increase your NC Mega Millions lottery winnings on all levels except for the jackpot itself – by adding the MEGAPLIER option when you are playing the North Carolina Mega Millions.
If your chosen NC Mega Millions numbers match the Mega Millions winning numbers on any of these prize levels – you immediately increase your winnings by either 2, 3, 4 or 5 times – depending on what Mega Millions MEGAPLIER number was drawn.

NC Mega Millions – Record Jackpots
The biggest jackpot win on the North Carolina Mega Millions to date was one half of the US$ 113 Million top prize up for grabs on September 30th 2011. There were 2 winning Mega Millions tickets on this occasion and the Jones family from Greenville, North Carolina scooped a cool US$ 56.5 Million.
The 2nd biggest NC Mega Millions win has been US$ 12 Million to date – won on May 28th 2010

NC Mega Millions – How Prizes are Paid
If you have won a North Carolina Mega Millions jackpot – you will be able to claim your prize as either a cash lump sum or as an annuity payment – If you choose the annuity option – your NC Mega Millions Lottery winnings will be paid to you annually over a 30 year period.
For all prizes on the North Carolina Mega Millions – you will have up to 180 days from the date of the draw taking place – to make your claim before your North Carolina Mega Millions ticket will become invalid.
If your win on the Mega Millions NC is up to US$ 599.99 – you will be able to claim your winnings at any NCEducationLottery retailer.
If you’ve had a win of between US$ 600 and US$ 99,999.99 on the North Carolina Mega Millions – you will need to claim your prize from one of the NCLottery offices, at the NCLottery Headquarters or by mail.
